Prices at UK supermarkets are rising faster than expected putting pressure on households already struggling financially.
These are the findings of Kantar Worldpanel who say that grocery prices increased by 4.8% in the 12 weeks up to the 11th July when compared to last year.
Director at Kantar Worldpanel, Martin Whittingham said 'While we previously predicted that grocery inflation would not exceed 5% in 2011 we believe this no longer to be the case.'
'The increasing inflation rate is putting extra pressure on shopper’s ability to manage their household budgets. With this in mind we expect the grocery market to slow in the coming months.'
With over 3 million UK households already in financial difficulty these rising costs will seem to come at the worst possible time.
