Citizens Advice Scotland has told the Scottish Parliament that personal debt remains the single biggest issue it advises on each day.

Over a quarter of all issues brought to the Scottish CAB in 2010/11 were relating to problems with debt. In total this amounts to 143,566 debt issues, or 400 each day.

When analysing the finances of their clients the Scottish CAB found that average debt was over £10,000. As many as one in ten have debts in excess of £50,000.

Susan McPhee, policy head at Citizens Advice Scotland said 'There has been a huge growth in the numbers of people struggling with debt and low income. Prices are rising all the time and people's incomes are just not keeping up with that, so many of them are turning to loan sharks and payday loans, which of course make their situation even worse.'
